- Yan Klukowski scored the game-winner in the 56th minute to lead the Central Connecticut Blue Devils to a 2-0 victory over the University of New Hampshire men’s soccer team at the 18th annual Nike Fall Classic on Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Wildcats drop to 1-3-1, while the Blue Devils even their record at 2-2-0.

CCSU’s Johan Rundquist fired hard on net causing UNH goalkeeper Mike Jenne (Vernon, N.Y.) to make a diving stop. The ball rifled onto the foot of Klukowski where he shot it into the left side of the net, ending 56 minutes of scoreless play.

The Blue Devils increased their lead to two goals with a tally from Christopher Brown with 17:21 remaining. David Tyrie took an indirect kick from midfield and connected with Brown, who headed the ball on goal.

With ten minutes remaining the Wildcats had an opportunity to get on the board when Scott Rowling (Richboro, Pa.) got the ball off a corner kick and took a hard shot that sailed above the net. The senior midfielder took another chance with 7:45, taking a shot from 20 yards out. CCSU goalkeeper Paul Armstrong made the save. Rowling and Kyle Urso (Lombard, Ill.) led the team in shots with four. With five minutes remaining, senior forward Adam Marcellus (Malvern, Pa.) connected with a header that missed the net, right side.

UNH outshot the Blue Devils by a margin of 16-7, but goalkeeper Armstrong made seven saves to hold off the Wildcats. Jenne made three saves for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats return to action on Sunday, Sept. 16 when they host Sacred Heart in round two action of the Nike Fall Classic. The game, scheduled for 3 p.m., will follow the Central Connecticut-Vermont match at 12:30 p.m.
