The University of New Hampshire men’s soccer team played New Hampshire’s United Soccer League Division 2 professional team, the NH Phantoms, to a 1-1 tie on Bremner Field on March 24 to open the 2007 spring campaign. The game featured three 35-minute periods despite a snowy forecast.
Sophomore Scott Rowling (Richboro, Pa.) scored in the first period off of an Adam Marcellus (Malvern, Pa.) cross to give the Wildcats an early lead. It was Marcellus’ speed that enabled him to beat his defender down the left side before finding Rowling all alone unmarked in the box. The Wildcats did well to dictate possession and hold the Phantoms scoreless for most of the match until midway through the third period of action.
Junior goalkeeper Mike Jenne (Vernon, N.Y.) played the first two periods and held the NH Phantoms scoreless. Freshman Ayotunde Ogunbiyi (Gwynedd, Pa.) made his collegiate debut in net, playing the third period for the Wildcats.
UNH’s next match will feature America East rival University of Vermont on Saturday, March 31 at 4 p.m. on Bremner Field.
