Matt Shump

WALTHAM, Mass. - For his performance both in the classroom and on the soccer field, University of New Hampshire junior Matt Shump (Durham, N.H) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Shump qualified for consideration as an Academic All-American by earning First Team All-District honors earlier this month. He was one of four America East players to be voted onto the first team in District I, which includes the New England states as well as New York.

Named one of the team's captains before the 2005 season, Shump led the Wildcats to a 9-5-3 overall record, the best record for UNH since the 2002 season. As a member of the backline, he helped New Hampshire earn a 0.57 goals against average, the lowest in the 42-year history of the men's soccer program and presently sixth-best in Division I.

Shump also contributed to the team's success on the offensive end, tying for the team lead with three assists this season. He picked up his first career point against Furman on Sept. 16 and followed that up with assists at Maine on Oct. 5 and against Hartford on Nov. 2.

Academically, Shump is a mathematics major who has appeared on the America East Fall Academic Honor Roll in both 2003 and 2004. He has twice received the Walter Weiland Award as the team's most dedicated player, and has been named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2003 UNH NIKE Fall Soccer Classic, the 2004 America East Postseason Tournament, and the 2005 UNH NIKE Fall Soccer Classic.

The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America; a 2,000-member organization consisted of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
