UNH MEN'S SOCCER EARNS FIRST 2005 CONFERENCE VICTORY
Eric Masi

DURHAM, N.H. - Senior Eric Masi (York, Maine) scored his fifth goal of the season with under 14 minutes left to play in regulation, giving the New Hampshire Wildcats a 1-0 victory over the Binghamton Bearcats Saturday night at Bremner Field in America East men's soccer action.

The Wildcats drew three corner kicks in a one-minute span, and they took advantage of the third one to go on top. Chris Bennice (Scotia, N.Y.) sent the ball from the right corner towards the right post. Stationed at the post, Pedro Braz (East Providence, R.I.) sent a header to the top of the box, where Masi fired a shot into the top of the net over Bearcat goalie Ryan Bertoni's head for the tally.

On a wet field with rain still coming down and the wind gusting in the first half, the two teams were limited in their scoring opportunities. The Wildcats earned three shots on goal while the Bearcats had only one shot on goal, which UNH goalie Brian Levey (Pittsburgh, Pa.) saved on the way to his eighth shutout of the season.

Binghamton (9-4-1, 2-2-0 America East) furiously attempted to tie the match in the final four minutes, continually shuttling players in and out to stop the clock and set up its offense. The UNH backline held firm, giving up only three total shots to the visitors in the second half.

New Hampshire (8-3-2, 1-3-1 America East) travels next week to Maryland for a key conference match with UMBC on Wednesday, October 19, at 3 p.m. The next home match for the Wildcats comes on Wednesday, October 26, against in-state rival Dartmouth at 7 p.m. at Bremner Field.
