HANOVER, N.H. - Tyler Jackson's (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) goal in the 83rd minute broke a scoreless tie and gave the UNH Wildcats a 1-0 victory over in-state rival Dartmouth Tuesday afternoon.
The goal was scored as a result of a free kick taken by Matt DeCastro (East Providence, R.I./Providence Country Day), who passed it to Jackson. Jackson put the ball in the upper right corner of the net past Dartmouth goaltender Rowan Anders.
The match was rough at times, especially for Dartmouth, as the Big Green was called for 18 fouls while the Wildcats were whistled nine times. However, two UNH players, Logan Lee (Racine, Wis./Washington Park) and Michael Card (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) were given yellow cards while only one Dartmouth player was penalized in the same way.
Dartmouth (4-2-6) had its chances with nine corner kicks and ten shots, five of them on goal. UNH goalie Brian Levey (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) stopped all five shots to pick up his fifth shutout of the season, one off the school record.
Before Jackson's goal, the Wildcats had not scored since Jackson scored off a free kick two weeks ago against Northeastern. In the three games since, UNH went through a scoreless tie with Stony Brook and lost to Quinnipiac and Boston University.
New Hampshire (5-4-6) will look to clinch a spot in the America East Tournament on Saturday when it hosts Albany at Lewis Field at 2 p.m.
