Freshman trio combines for lone UNH goal
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Freshman forward Derek Bragg (Downington. Pa.) netted the lone University of New Hampshire goal in the game's 80th minute to give the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team a 1-1 tie to St. Francis (N.Y.) in second-round action of the Smith Barney Classic hosted by Vermont at Centennial Field. The Wildcats move to 0-1-3 on the season while the Terriers are now 1-2-1.
St. Francis jumped out to an early lead as Andreas Parpas scored off a rebound during the game's 15th minute to give SFC a 1-0. The initial shot was by Carlos Moncaleano, who was credited with the assist.
Bragg's equalizing goal with 10:51 to play in the second half came off a centering pass from Adam Marcellus (Malvern, Pa.). Freshman forward Bryan Stewart (Swanzey, N.H.) headed it toward the net before Bragg drove it home from close range. It is the first college points for all three newcomers.
Senior goalkeeper Mike Vignola (Hudson, N.H.) made one save in his first appearance of the season.
Senior Tyler Jackson (Amherst, N.H.) and sophomore Ross Fishbain (Racine, Wisc.) were named to the Smith Barney Classic All-Tournament Team. UNH has not lost at the Smith Barney in nine of the last 10 games in the tournament.
New Hampshire returns to action next weekend when it plays host to Colgate on Friday, September 18, in a 7:00 p.m. game. That game is scheduled to be played at Bremner Field, UNH's new AstroPlay field.
