ORONO, Maine - A goal by Nicholas Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.) in the 58th minute lifted the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Maine Wednesday afternoon. The game was the America East opener for both schools and UNH improves to 5-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play. The Black Bears fall to 3-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the league.

After a scoreless first half, Mello got the 'Cats on the board at the 57:20 mark. Mello took a corner kick from Tyler Jackson (Amherst, N.H.) and slid it past Maine keeper Chad Mongeon (6 saves) for the eventual game-winner.

Junior Mike Vignola (Hudson, N.H.) posted his third shutout of the season in net for UNH, turning away six Black Bear shots. Vignola has allowed just three goals in the four games he has played this season, posting a 0.72 goals-against average. The hosts did manage to eke out an 18-15 shot advantage on the afternoon.

New Hampshire hits the road once again Saturday (9/20), as they travel to Holy Cross for a 3:00 pm contest. The next Wildcat home game is September 27, when UNH hosts Massachusetts in a 4:00 game. That game will be played at Bremner Field, UNH's new AstroPlay field.
