BURLINGTON, Vt. - Logan Lee (Racine, Wis.) and Tyler Jackson (Amherst, N.H.) each netted goals to propel the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Vanderbilt in second-round action of the Smith Barney Classic hosted by Vermont at Centennial Field. The Wildcats improve to 3-1-0 on the season while the Commodores fall to 0-2-2.
Lee got the 'Cats on the board with his goal at the 36:38 mark. Starting on the right side of the box, Lee beat a Vanderbilt defender and fired a shot from five yards that crossed the goal line on the inside of the near post. Brett Wyman (Durham, N.H.) assisted on the goal.
Jackson added UNH's second goal with just under 17 minutes to play. Moments after re-entering the game, Jackson collected the ball near the penalty spot after it bounced around following a New Hampshire corner kick. He was able to connect on the 15-yarder for the unassisted tally.
Junior goalkeeper Mike Vignola (Hudson, N.H.) made two saves for his second shutout of the season in two outings. He has not allowed a goal in his last 208:30 dating back to last season.
Wyman and senior Brendan Hankard (Glastonbury, Conn.) were named to the Smith Barney Classic All-Tournament Team. UNH, which won the Classic in 2001 and 2002, has now won seven of its last eight games in the tournament.
New Hampshire returns to action next weekend when it travels to Denver to take part in the Denver Invitational. The 'Cats take on Air Force Friday (9/12) and the host Pioneers Sunday (9/14). Both games are scheduled for 3:30 EDT starts (1:30 local time). The next Wildcat home game is September 27, when UNH hosts Massachusetts in a 4:00 game. That game is scheduled to be played at Bremner Field, UNH's new AstroPlay field.
