BURLINGTON, Vt. - Freshman Josh Hareld (N. Kingstown, R.I.) netted his first collegiate goal to lead the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Bucknell University in second-round action of the Smith Barney Soccer Classic here this afternoon. The win improves UNH to 3-1-0, while the Bison drop to 1-4-0.
Hareld netted his goal in the 39th minute to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Senior Drew Ferrigno (Springfield, Mass.) assisted on the goal. The 'Cats would take the 1-0 lead into the break. UNH got the game-winner in the 61st minute when a throw-in by sophomore Doug Lawver (Doylestown, Pa.) skipped off the head of a Bucknell defender and into the Bison net for an own goal.
Bucknell would cut the deficit in half when Nick Taylor (Cleveland, Ohio) scored off a scramble in front of the net to make it 2-1. The Bison had several quality scoring chances in the waning minutes, but could not tie the game.
Senior Dan Sirota (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) made his first start of the season in net for New Hampshire and made six saves. Bucknell's Keith Sheldon (Sudbury, Mass.) made seven saves.
Named to the All-Tournament team for New Hampshire were Hareld, Lawver, and junior Ken Hayner (Charlton, N.Y.)
The Wildcats return to action on Friday, when they face Marist College in first-round action of the Hartwick Nike Classic at Oneonta, N.Y. Game time is 4 p.m.
