BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of New Hampshire men's soccer team posted a 2-0 win over Siena College in first-round action of the Smith Barney Soccer Classic here this afternoon. The win improves the Wildcats to 2-1-0 on the young season, while the Saints fall to 1-2-0 on the year.
UNH broke open a scoreless tie at 52:07 when senior Adam Purcell (Barrington, R.I.), playing in his first game of the season, deposited a ball from point-blank range into the net. Junior Andy Karam (Schenectady, N.Y.) assisted on the goal. Purcell was forced to miss New Hampshire's first two games due to injury.
UNH's other goal came in the 60th minute when senior Drew Ferrigno (Springfield, Mass.) scored on a feed from sophomore Doug Lawver (Doylestown, Pa.).
Junior Shaun O'Neil (Wrentham, Mass.) went the distance in net for the 'Cats and made six saves en route to posting his first shutout of the season. Siena's Andrew Sether (Garden City, N.Y.) stopped four shots.
Both teams return to action tomorrow in second round action of the Smith Barney Soccer Classic. UNH takes on Bucknell at noon, while Siena faces host Vermont at 2 p.m.
