DURHAM, N.H.-The University of New Hampshire men's soccer team defeated Quinnipiac College 3-0 in the second game of the 10th Annual Nike UNH Soccer Classic Saturday.
The two teams battled back and forth for most of the first half until Wildcat junior Drew Ferrigno (Southwick, Mass.) headed the ball past Quinnipiac goaltender James Ryan to get the Wildcats on the board. Senior Brian Rosa (Portsmouth, R.I.) recorded the assist.
In the second half, UNH junior Adam Purcell (Barrington, R.I.) found the net off a penalty kick to extend the lead to 2-0.
Purcell later capped off the scoring on a goal with two seconds remaining in regulation to put UNH on top 3-0.
UNH senior goaltender Mitch Osman (Herndon, Va.) picked up three saves and Quinnipiac's James Ryan made one save in net.
The Wildcats improve to 2-0-0 on the season and Quinnipiac falls to 0-2-0.
In other tournament action, University of Vermont and Philadelphia University played to a 2-2 tie in double overtime. Philadelphia got on the board first when Everett Palache scored eight minutes into the game off an assist from Sean Lannon to put the Rams up 1-0.
In the second half, Vermont's Oliver Ellsworth knotted the game at 1-1 with a goal five minutes into the second half off an assist from Andrew Combra. Combra found the net two minutes later to put the Catamounts on top 2-1. Philadelphia's Sean Lannon tied the game at 2-2 with a goal late in the game.
Tournament action will resume Sunday with Vermont and Quinnipiac squaring off at 12:30 p.m. UNH and Philadelphia meet at 3 p.m.
