WRIGHT AND ARCHAMBAULT-LEGER RECORD TWO TOP-10 FINISHES AT SLU

. – Veronique Archambault-Leger (Verdun, Quebec) and Sarah Wright (Wyoming, Minn.) both raced to a pair of top-10 finishes to lead the University of New Hampshire ski team to a fourth-place finish at the St. Lawrence University Winter Carnival, which was held Jan. 18-19.

UNH recorded a total of 459 points to finish behind Dartmouth College (587.5 points), Middlebury College (555) and University of Vermont (527.5) in the 10-team event.

Archambault-Leger, who won the women’s slalom last week in the 2008 circuit opener at the Bates carnival, finished second by completing Saturday’s two slalom runs at Whiteface Mountain in a time of 1 minute, 29.07 seconds to lead the Wildcats to the second-highest team score in the event with 73 points. Aileen Farrell (Ottawa, Ontario) also recorded a top-10 finish with a 1:32.14 clocking that was seventh-best overall and Eilleen Dent (Castorland, N.Y.) took 13th place in 1:32.79.

Wright anchored the UNH women’s Nordic squad to the third-best team scores in both the 5K freestyle (59 points) and 15K classic (63). She opened the weekend Friday in the 5K freestyle race at Mt. Van Hovenberg and completed the course in 14:13.3 to earn fifth place. Wright also raced to seventh place in Saturday’s 15K classic race with a time of 43:09.0.

Two other ‘Cats recorded top-20 finishes in the 5K free with Katie Miller (Lenox, Mass.) in 16th place (14:53.7) and Heather Zimmerman (Bethel, Maine) in 18th (14:57.6). In the 15K classic, Marlijne Cook (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) was the 12th skier to cross the finish line (at 43:50.7) and Natasha Kullas (Timmins, Ontario) placed 21st in 44:56.1.

Sean McNamara (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) recorded runs of 59.31 and 1:02.95 to finish in second place with an overall time of 2:02.26 in Friday’s men’s giant slalom competition, which was also held at Whiteface Mountain. Willie Ford (Plymouth, N.H.) completed two strong runs to finish in fifth place with a time of 2:02.74. Ethan Weibrecht (Lake Placid, N.Y.) completed the scoring in 22nd place at 2:05.37.

Archambault-Leger finished seventh overall in the GS with an overall mark of 2:07.99. Cynthia Tessier (Ste Julienne, Quebec) completed her two runs in 2:09.03 for 13th place and she edge out Farrell, who took 14th place, by .07-of-a-second.

Michael Cremeno (Pembroke, N.H.) was UNH’s fastest skier in the slalom with a time of 1:26.46 for ninth place. Weibrecht’s mark of 1:26.97 earned 14th place and Matt Wallman (Park City, Utah) took 21st place in 1:28.01 to complete the team scoring.

The men’s Nordic team recorded a pair of top-20 finishes in the 10K free with Dylan McGuffin (Northfield, N.H.) in 14th place at 25:36.0 and Michael Lessard (Greene, Maine) in 17th at 25:41.2.

Both McGuffin and Lessard also earned team points in the 20K classic race. McGuffin was the second-fastest Wildcat with a time of 57:33.6 for 29th place and Lessard placed directly behind his teammate in 57:35.3. Rody Lageson (St. Paul, Minn.) was the top ‘Cat in the event as his mark of 56:51.9 earned 24th place.

New Hampshire returns to action Feb. 1-2 at the University of Vermont Winter Carnival. The Nordic races will be held at Trapps Family Lodge while Stowe Mountain will be the alpine venue.
