Men's Hockey's Thompson Tabbed Hockey East Player of the Week

WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Senior forward Paul Thompson (Derry, N.H.) of the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team was named Hockey East Athletic Republic Player of the Week. The announcement was made Monday afternoon by the league office. Thompson earned HE Player of the Week honors Nov. 22.

Thompson scored four goals and handed out two assists leading UNH to a four-point weekend in Hockey East with wins over Mass.-Lowell and Massachusetts. On Friday, he tallied his second hat trick of the season in a 5-2 win over UML and added an assist. On Saturday, Thompson scored the team's first goal and made a nifty behind-the-back pass to set up Phil DeSimone for the eventual game-winner. Thompson was a plus-4 on the weekend with seven shots on net.

Thompson leads the 'Cats in six offensive categories: points (31), goals (15), power-play goals (seven), game-winning goals (three), shots (83) and shooting percentage (.181). He is also third in assists (16) and tied for second in plus/minus (+9). Thompson has tallied a point in 15 of 19 games, including 11 of the last 12 games, with 10 multiple-point efforts. He has tallied a goal and an assist in the same game eight times, including four of the last five games.

In the national statistics, Thompson ranks third in points (1.63 per game), fifth in goals (0.79 per game) and 20th in assists (0.84 per game); he is also fifth in both power-play goals (seven) and game-winning goals (three). In Hockey East, he is the league leader in both points and power-play points (14), as well as second in goals and fourth in assists.

Thompson is approaching the 100-point milestone. In 120 career games, he has amassed 91 points on 44 goals and 47 assists. He is the team's active leader in points per game (0.76).

New Hampshire returns to action when it battles intrastate rival Dartmouth College in the Battle for the RiverStone Cup at the Verizon Wireless Arena (Manchester, N.H.) on Jan. 15 (7 p.m.).
