WAKEFIELD, Mass. – The Hockey East Association announced Monday, June 8 the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey program placed eight of its student-athletes on the 94-player Hockey East All-Academic Team.
Senior forwards Thomas Fortney (Webster Groves, Mo.) and Alan Thompson (Gilford, N.H.) headline the group as they became the fifth and sixth players in program history chosen as a four-time Hockey East All-Academic Team selection, joining David Busch, Jason Krog, Brad Flaishans and Chad Onufrechuk. The pair were honored by the league as “Distinguished Scholar” status given to those student-athletes, who achieved a 3.0 or better in each semester over four seasons.
Sophomore Greg Manz (Wayne, Pa) earned All-Academic status for the second time in as many seasons, while Bobby Butler (Marlboro, Mass.), Matt DiGirolamo (Penilyn, Pa.), Damon Kipp (Salmon Arm, B.C.), Nick Krates (Palos Park, Ill.) and Steve Moses (Leominster, Mass.) were selected to the All-Academic team for the first time as a Wildcat. All eight players earned at least a 3.0 GPA in each of the two academic periods in which they actively competed.
The Wildcats officially kick off the 2009-10 season on Saturday, Oct. 10 at ECAC foe Rensselaer at 4 p.m. at the Houston Fieldhouse in Troy, N.Y. UNH will host an exhibition game on Saturday, Oct. 3 against Acadia University at the Whittemore Center at 7 p.m. New Hampshire’s home opener is Friday, Oct. 16 against national finalist Miami University.
