BOSTON – The University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team was picked to finish tied for first in the Hockey East preseason Coaches’ Poll, which was announced on Tuesday afternoon at the league’s annual media day at Banners Restaurant at the TD Banknorth Garden.

The Wildcats garnered 84 points in the poll and five first-place votes, which was good enough for a first-place tie with Boston College. After being selected fourth in the preseason last year, UNH captured the regular-season title by posting an 18-7-2 record in league play.

UNH finished the 06-07 season with a 26-11-2 overall record, which helped the ‘Cats qualify for the NCAA tournament for the sixth-straight season.

The Wildcats return a wealth of talent including four senior Hockey East honorable mentions from a year ago forwards Matt Fornataro (Calgary, Alberta) and Mike Radja (Yorkville, Ill.), defender Brad Flaishans (Glendale, Ariz.) and netminder Kevin Regan (South Boston, Mass.).

New Hampshire opens the 2007-08 season on Friday, Oct. 12 in an exhibition game against New Brunswick. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Whittemore Center.
