No. 15 Wildcat hockey takes out Maine, 7-4

ORONO, Maine - Junior forwards Brett Hemingway (Surrey, B.C.) and Jacob Micflikier (Winnipeg, Manitoba) tallied two goals apiece to lead the No. 15 ranked University of New Hampshire men's hockey team to a 7-4 victory against No. 8 ranked University of Maine in front of a soldout crowd of 5,641 at Alfond Arena in Hockey East action on Saturday night in Orono.

Junior forward Josh Ciocco (Atco, N.J.) gave UNH a 5-1 lead in the third period with a short handed goal for his third goal of the season at 2:22. Ciocco beat Maine goalie Matt Lundin with a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot, beating Lundin high glove side.

Maine made the game 5-4 with 1:26 remaining in the game on a goal by Billy Ryan, while UNH sealed the game with two empty-net goals by Micflikier with 1:06 and three seconds remaining in the game. Micflikier posted his 100th career point as a Wildcat on the first empty netter. Hemingway finished the game with a team-high three points (2g, 1a).

UNH regained control of fourth place in the Hockey East standings with the win to improve to 14-10-4 on the year (10-6-3 HE, 23 points), while Maine drops to 18-10-0 overall and 11-8-0 in league play.

Hemingway added his second goal of the game with just three seconds remaining in the second period. Freshman blueliner Jamie Fritsch (Odenton, Md.) took at slapshot from the high slot and Hemingway collected the puck and beat Lundin blocker side. Fritsch also posted a career-high two points on the night.

Freshman forward Greg Collins gave UNH a 2-0 lead with third goal of the season at 15:28 of the second session. Hemingway got back in the scoring column with his 13th goal of the season just 57 seconds after the Collins tally to give the 'Cats a 3-0 advantage.

Hemingway scored off a rebound from a shot. Micflikier earned his 99th career point with the helper on Hemingway's first goal of the game. Freshman blueliner Joe Charlebois (Potsdam, N.Y.) also earned an assist on UNH's third goal of the game.

Freshman forward Trevor Smith (North Vancouver, B.C.) gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead with his fourth goal of his career with a wrist shot from the slot to beat Maine goalie Matt Lundin high glove side at 11: 38 of the first period. Sophomore forward Brian Pouliot (Hooksett, N.H.) fed the puck to Smith as he spun past a Maine defender in the low slot, freshman Jerry Pollastrone (Revere, Mass.) also earned an assist on the Smith goal. The Wildcats outshot Maine, 16-5 in the opening period.

UNH won at Maine for the first time since Jan. 8, 2000, the 'Cats were 0-7-1 heading into tonight's game, since that last win at Alfond Arena. Greg Moore, Jon Jankus and Josh Soares all scored for Maine, including two goals in the third period for the Black Bears.

Senior goaltender Jeff Pietrasiak (Shrewsbury, Mass.) started his 14th game for UNH this season registering 25 saves in the win. Lundin posted 30 saves and allowed five goals in 40 minutes of action for the Black Bears in the loss, while freshman Ben Bishop allowed one goal on six shots.

The next Wildcat home game is Feb. 10 vs. Merrimack College. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 7 p.m.
