Wildcat men’s hockey defeats Providence, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I.-The No. 6 ranked University of New Hampshire men's hockey team defeated Providence College, 2-1, on Friday night at Schneider Arena.

Sophomore forward Daniel Winnik (Mississauga, Ont.) faked out PC goalie David Cacciola for his ninth goal of the year and beat him glove side to give UNH a 2-0 lead at 5:07 of the second period. Sophomore forward Jacob Micflikier (Winnipeg, Man.) and sophomore blueliner Michael Hutchins (Wolfeboro, N.H.) help set up the Wildcats game winning goal.

With 2:25 remaining in the second period the Friars capitalized with a power-play goal by senior defenseman Eric Lundberg, a slap shot from the left point. James Pemberton and Tony Zancanaro were credited with helpers on the Lundberg goal, his second goal of the season.

UNH got on the scoreboard first in the game with 11:35 left in the opening period on senior forward Preston Callander's (Regina, Sask.) 10th goal of the season. His shot sailed past the right shoulder of Cacciola, freshman defensemen Craig Switzer (Peachland, B.C.) and sophomore forward Josh Ciocco (Atco, N.J.) earned assists on the Callander tally.

Junior goaltender Jeff Pietrasiak (Shrewsbury, Mass.) made his 19th career start for UNH and made 28 stops for the 'Cats, including 11 saves in the opening frame. Cacciola stopped 17 saves in the loss for Providence.

The Wildcats (13-4-2 overall, 7-1-1 HE) return to action at home on Saturday, January 8th to finish off the season series with Providence College. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 7 p.m. Tickets are still available for the game and the contest will be broadcast live by New Hampshire Public Television.
