WAKEFIELD, Mass.-- Senior assistant captain Lanny Gare (Vernon, B.C.) and junior goaltender Mike Ayers (Hingham, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team were named KOHO Player of the Week and Co-Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, as announced by the Hockey East Association on Monday afternoon.

Gare, who earned Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career, posted two goals and three assists for five points in the weekend series vs. Minnesota, including the game tying goal on Friday and the game-winning goal on Saturday.

To date this year, he has registered five goals and three assists for eight points to lead the 'Cats squad in points scored, along with linemate Colin Hemingway. Gare currently ranks ninth in the nation in points and third in the nation in goals scored with five. In his Wildcat career, Gare has amassed 31 goals and 68 assists for 99 points in 114 games. He is currently one point from becoming the 58th Wildcat in school history to tally 100 or more career points.

Ayers earns the Defensive Player of the Week Award for the third time in his UNH career with a career-high 44 saves, including 21 saves in the third period, on Saturday, October 19 in the 3-1 win over No. 1 ranked Minnesota. Ayers' previous career high for saves in a game was 33 and his save total in the final period were four short of the school record.

In three starts this year, Ayers owns a 2-0-1 record with a 1.95 GAA and a .944 save percentage.

The Wildcat men's hockey team returns to action for its Hockey East season opener on Friday, October 25th at Northeastern University. Game time at Matthews Arena is 7 p.m.
