New Hampshire men's hockey defeats St. Francis Xavier, 5-1

DURHAM, N.H. -- The Univeristy of New Hampshire men's ice hockey team defeated St. Francis Xavier, 5-1, in exhibition play Saturday night at the Whittemore Center Arena.

Senior Jim Abbott (Mars, Pa.) notched the Wildcats' first goal at 5:22 in the first period on the power play. Sophomore Robbie Barker (Concord, N.H.) was given the lone assist. Barker and senior Josh Prudden (Andover, Mass.) also scored power-play goals in the opening stanza to give UNH a 3-0 lead.

The visitors scored the only goal in the middle frame when St. Francis Xavier forward Ryan Armstrong scored at 2:15.

Prudden recorded his second goal of the game 35 seconds into the third frame, increasing UNH's lead to three goals at 4-1. Senior assistant captians Colin Hemingway (Surrey, B.C.) and Lanny Gare (Vernon, B.C.) were credited with the assists. Sophomore defenseman Tyson Teplitsky (Saskatoon, Sask.) closed out the scoring with a goal in the third period.

UNH outshot St. Franicis, 45-12. Goaltenders junior Mike Ayers (Hingham, Mass.) and freshman Jeff Pietrasiak (Shewsbury, Mass.) combined for 11 saves in the win. Pietraskiak played the final 10:47 of the game and stopped two shots.

St. Francis Xavier goalie Dwayne Bateman was credited with 40 saves.

The Wildcats will open the regular season against the University of Vermont Catamounts in Burlington, Vt. on Saturday, October 12. Game time is 7 p.m.
