WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Senior forward Jim Abbott (Mars, Pa.) and sophomore forward Matt Hoppe (East Lansing, Mich.) of the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team were named to the All-Academic Team by the Hockey East Association on Friday, June 13th.
Abbott and Hoppe were among 40 student-athletes in Hockey East to garner All-Academic honors. Abbott was a first-time selection, while Hoppe is being honored for the second time in his Wildcat career.
Abbott, in his senior season ranked fifth on the Wildcats in scoring and tallied 12 goals and 18 assists for 30 points. He leaves UNH with 38 goals, 56 assists and 94 points in 141 games. Abbott's two-goal performance in the 2002 NCAA Regionals vs. Cornell propelled the Wildcats to an appearance in the Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minn. Abbott also registered the first hat trick of his career March 7, 2003 vs. UMass-Lowell in the Hockey East quarterfinals.
Hoppe saw action in 26 games in 2002-2003 and registered his first career point on October 19th with an assist vs. the Minnesota Golden Gophers. He was honored at UNH's annual team banquet with the Sid Knight Award, which goes to the Wildcat player with the highest GPA.
