New Hampshire men's hockey skates over Ottawa, 9-1

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire men's hockey team rode a four-goal first period to a 9-1 exhibition victory over the University of Ottawa at the Whittemore Center on Saturday.

Junior Lanny Gare (Vernon, B.C.) led the scoring parade with two goals and three assists. Junior Jim Abbott (Mars, Pa.) chipped in with one goal and three assists and senior Darren Haydar (Milton, Ontario) netted a pair in the third.

Senior Matt Carney (Bridgewater, Mass.) and sophomore Michael Ayers (Hingham, Mass.) split the game in net and combined for 13 saves.Ottawa's lone goal came with 18 seconds to go in the second. Mike Corneau broke up the Wildcat shutout bid with a power-play goal, beating Ayers on a slapshot from the point.

Sophomore Pat Foley (Milton, Mass.) scored UNH's first goal 1:44 in the game. Foley picked up a loose rebound in the Ottawa crease and slid it to the back of the net for a 1-0 New Hampshire lead. Abbott made it 2-0 at 7:11 on a shot from the point during a Wildcat power play.

UNH netted two more goal in the first. Junior Colin Hemingway (Surrey, B.C.) scored a shorthanded goal on assist from Gare at 14:10. Gare added his second of the game with 11 seconds to go in the period.

The Wildcats scored two goals in the second. Gare scored at 5:56 and sophomore Nathan Martz (Chilliwack, B.C.) added another at 10:04. Haydar scored a pair in the third. And with five seconds to go in the game sophomore Tyler Scott (Rockville, Md.) put the finishing touch on the game with a late goal.

The Wildcats open the season Oct. 13 against the University of Vermont at the Whittemore Center (7 p.m.).
