New Hampshire men's hockey fall to UMass-Lowell, 2-1

DURHAM, N.H. - Peter Hay completed a River Hawk comeback with 1:27 remaining, as the UMass-Lowell defeated the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team, 2-1, on Friday at the Whittemore Center, forcing a game three in the best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinal.

Ed McGrane tied the game with 5:52 to go and Hay scored the game-winner 4:25 later on a feed from Brad Rooney. McGrane's goal was assisted by Tom Rouleau. UNH goalie Ty Conklin (Anchorage, Alaska) had 22 saves before McGrane broke up the shutout bid.

Scoring UNH's lone goal was Johnny Rogers (Etobicoke, Ontario). The three-game series continues Saturday at the Whitt. Game time is 7 p.m. The game will appear on Fox Sports New England.

Jimi St. John earned the victory with 33 saves and Conklin finished with 23.

Early in the second, the Wildcats broke a scoreless tie on a goal from Rogers. Corey-Joe Ficek beat a River Hawk defender down the right side boards, swooped to the front of the net and took the shot. St. John made the initial save, but Rogers was there to pick up the rebound and deposit it into the back of the net.
