DURHAM, N.H. (AP) Sean Austin scored the game winning goal one minute and 31 seconds into overtime to lift New Hampshire (6-2-0, 3-0-0) over Providence (2-5-0, 0-3-0) 3-2 Friday night.
Austin put the shot in from in front of the net off rebounds from Lanny Gare and Mike Souza.
Providence knotted the game 2-2 in the second period when Fernando Pisani found the right corner of the net for a shorthanded goal.
In the first period, New Hampshire got on the board when Jim Abbott scored off a Patrick Foley rebound for a 1-0 lead. UNH extended the lead 2-0 when Gare put one past Providence goaltender Nolan Schaefer on the left side of the cage. Souza and Darren Haydar recorded assists on the goal. Providence cut the lead 2-1 less than two minutes later when Pisani put a rebound through the legs of New Hampshire goaltender Ty Conklin.
The two teams battled through a scoreless third period with Conklin making six saves and Schaefer stopping 11 shots.
Conklin finished with 31 saves and Schaefer tallied 19 in a losing cause.
