SAULT STE. MARIE, MI. — The University of New Hampshire men’s ice hockey team finished a weekend sweep of Lake Superior State University on Saturday with a 5-3 victory at Taffy Abel Arena.
The win moves UNH to 3-0-0 (0-0-0 Hockey East) on the year as the Lakers drop to 1-3-1 (1-1-0 CCHA).
The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Johnny Rogers (Etobicoke, Ont.) goal 10:37 into the opening period. Rogers took a feed from Jason Shipulski (Saugus, Mass.) on a two-on-one break for the one-goal advantage. The 1-0 score would hold up through the first stanza of play.
The Wildcats then gave themselves some breathing room with a three-goal outburst in the second period. Early in the period, Darren Haydar (Milton, Ontario) made it 2-0 with his first goal of the season. Haydar, who scored a UNH freshman 31 goals last season, broke in alone after taking a pass from centerman John Sadowski (Glenview, Ill.). Haydar notched his second of the game just over six minutes later on yet another feed from Sadowski. Freshman Lanny Gare (Vernon, B.C.) then notched his first career goal at the 11:49 mark of the second period off an assist from classmate Garrett Stafford (Los Angeles, Calif.) to put UNH up 4-0.
The Lakers were able to get on the board with just under four minutes remaining in the period to cut the Wildcat lead to 4-1.
In the third, Shipulski added a UNH goal before Lake State notched its second of the game at the 8:23 mark of the period. Lake State closed out the scoring in the game with a goal with just :07 remaining to play in the contest.
UNH goaltender Matt Carney (Bridgewater, Mass) earned his first career start and picked up the win, making 24 saves.
The Wildcats return home Friday night to take on RPI at the Whittemore Center and then travel to UMass-Lowell Saturday night to open up the Hockey East schedule. Both games start at 7 p.m.
