Men's Ice Hockey Falls To Boston College, 4-1

CHESTNUT HILL, MA -- Junior forward Brian Gionta notched his second hat trick of the season to lead Boston College to a 4-1 win over the University of New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon at Kelley Rink. Gionta leads the Eagles with 25 goals on the season

All three of Gionta's goals were of the highlight-reel variety, especially his hat trick goal. Gionta circled behind his own net and picked up a puck from Mike Mottau. He then proceeded to skate end-to-end before wristing a shot past UNH goaltender Ty Conklin (26 saves) at 9:00 of the third period.

Gionta got the Eagles started just 2:49 into the first period to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead with a nifty redirection of a Mottau shot on the power play.

New Hampshire would draw even early in the second period, capitalizing on a BC turnover. David Busch forced the turnover and linemates Johnny Rogers and Tim Walsh combined to set up Busch for the goal.

Gionta would score his second goal of the game at 9:47 of the second just after a UNH penalty had expired. Marty Hughes drop a pass to the right side of the net to Blake Bellefeuille, who found Gionta wide open on the back door for the easy tally.

Jeff Farkas closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal at 19:05 of the third.

Boston College freshman goaltender Tim Kelleher made 27 saves in the game.

With the win, Boston College improves to 20-9-1 on the season. The Eagles now sit in sole possession of third place in Hockey East with a record of 12-7-1. New Hampshire falls to 20-7-5 and remains in second place in Hockey East with a record of 12-5-5.
