Men's Basketball Announces Signings of Smith, Gabriel
DURHAM, N.H. – Head coach Bill Herrion of the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team is pleased to announce the signings of Jaleen Smith (Freeport, Texas) and Williams Gabriel (Lagos, Nigeria) to the program. The pair will join the Wildcats for the 2013-14 season.
Smith, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound point guard from Brazosport High School, had a phenomenal senior year at BHS. He averaged 19.3 points per game and dished out 5.8 assists per game while coming down with 7.5 rebounds per game. Smith was tabbed a Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Region member and a 4-A All-State selection. The two-time First Team All-Conference member was also named the conference Defensive Player of the Year and the county MVP, as voted by sports writers. He was selected to play in the North-South Texas All-Star Game in San Antonio and in the Houston Association of Basketball Coaches All-Star Game.
"Jaleen's a versatile perimeter player who can play all three perimeter spots," Herrion said. "He is a very good athlete with length, which will help him both offensively and defensively. Once his body gets stronger physically, he has a chance to be a really good player."
Gabriel, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound power forward, comes to UNH after playing at Huntington Prep in Huntington, W.Va. He helped the Express achieve an overall mark of 83-8 in his four years with the team, helping him become the winningest player in school history. Gabriel helped the team achieve a No. 1 ranking as a senior and was named a McDonald's All-America nominee. He averaged 2.5 points per game and 3.0 rebounds per game and will graduate from Huntington Prep with high honors.
"We're really happy to get Gabe," Herrion said. "He fills a need recruiting wise that we had with this class of getting another frontcourt player to give us depth. Gabe is very athletic, plays really hard, is coming from a very successful prep school program and his best years are definitely ahead of him."
