Men's Basketball trio honored at America East banquet

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Seniors Alvin Abreu (Lynn, Mass.) and Brian Benson (Rochester, N.Y.) along with junior Chandler Rhoads (Berryville, Va.) were all honored at the America East's annual awards banquet on Friday afternoon at the Harry Jack Gray Center on the campus of the University of Hartford.

Abreu, who ranks seventh in the league in scoring with 13.7 points per game, picks up America East All-Conference Second Team honors for the second time in his career. He has scored in double-digits in seven of the last eight contests, notching double-figures in all but six games this season. The senior co-captain caps off the regular season carving his name in the UNH record books, ranking first all-time in games played (117), first all-time in minutes played (3,840), third all-time in scoring (1,575), fourth all-time in 3-pointers made (216), fourth all-time in field goals made (532) and fifth all-time in free throws made (295).

Benson was tabbed to the America East All-Academic Team for the third straight year after putting together another stellar season on the hardwood and in the classroom. A staple in the starting lineup this season, he made a name for himself on the glass, leading the conference in rebounds (8.4 rpg). He also ranks among the league leaders in field goal percentage (.524) and blocks (25), ranking fifth and fourth, respectively. The three-time conference honor roll member ranks second all-time in program history in blocks (79) and eighth all-time in rebounds (629).

As for Rhoads, he collects America East All-Defensive Team honors for the second consecutive season after proving once again to be the team's top defender. He was a key component on a defensive unit that ranks first in the league in defensive 3-point field goal percentage (.291; 112-385), third in scoring defense (62.8 ppg) and fifth in defensive field goal percentage, holding opponents to a .420 shooting clip (612-1456) from the floor.

The fifth-seeded Wildcats return to action when they take on fourth-seeded Albany at the 2012 America East Basketball Championship presented by Newman's Own at the University of Hartford's Chase Family Arena on Saturday, March 3 (2:15 p.m.).
