DILIEGRO, U.S. HOOP TEAM CAPTURE GOLD AT MACCABIAH GAMES
DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire junior center Dane DiLiegro (Lexington, Mass.) and the United States men’s basketball team overcame an eight-point deficit with under two minutes to go in regulation to force overtime and eventually pull out a 95-86 win over Israel (5-1) in the championship game at the 18th Maccabiah Games on Wednesday afternoon.
The U.S. captured their second gold medal in the last three Games after defeating Israel, 82-71, in the final game in 2001. The Americans then captured bronze in 2005, while Israel defeated France for the gold. In its six contests at the Maccabiah Games, the U.S. outscored its opponents by an average of 35.8 points per game (104.8 to 69.0) en route to a 5-1 record.
Canada, which the Americans defeated 123-76 in the semifinal round Tuesday, won the Bronze medal.
