DURHAM, N.H. – Senior co-captains Blagoj Janev (Sydney, Australia) and Jermaine Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) combined for 47 points as the New Hampshire men’s basketball team cruised past UMBC, 64-51, on senior day at Lundholm Gymnasium.
The Wildcats (10-19, 6-10 AE) win its last regular season game, while the Retrievers (11-18, 7-9 AE) snap a two game winning streak with the loss.
Janev, who posted 23 points, eight rebounds and three blocks was named America East Player of the Game, which was the 11th time this season he was awarded the honor.
UNH opened the contest with an 11-6 run as Anderson netted a foul shot with 13:25 to play. The senior guard finished with 23 points, including a 3-of-3 effort from beyond the arc.
A jumper by UMBC center Mike Housman tied the score at 13 apiece with 11:01 to go before the teams rounded out the half by exchanging baskets. Janev drilled a 3-pointer with 43 seconds to go to put the ‘Cats up 32-29 at halftime.
UNH, who needed to beat UMBC and hope for a Vermont Catamount win over the Hartford Hawks in order to secure the seventh seed in the America East Championships, came out firing on all cylinders and used a 14-6 run to open the second half and never looked back. The two senior captains scored 26 of the Wildcats 32 points in the second half to help propel UNH to the victory and snap a two game losing streak.
UNH pulled down season-high 39 rebounds and limited UMBC to just 24 rebounds. Freshman forward Radar Onguetou (Yaoundé, Cameroon) posted nine rebounds along with eight points, while sophomore guard Tyrece Gibbs (Brockton, Mass.) added seven points and rebounds in the victory.
Junior guard Brian Hodges’ team-high 20 points led UMBC and Housman contributed with ten points and seven rebounds in the loss.
The Wildcats finish the regular season with an overall record of 10-19, as they begin to prepare to face the defending conference champion University at Albany next Saturday (March 3) at 6:30 p.m. at Boston University’s Agganis Arena for the America East Championships.
