DURHAM, N.H. –
Senior co-captain Blagoj Janev (Sydney, Australia) posted a game-high 23 points along with three rebounds to lead the University of New Hampshire Wildcats past Merrimack College, 66-57, in non-conference exhibition play on Tuesday night in Lundholm Gymnasium.
The Wildcats and Warriors headed into halftime with the score even at 27 apiece before UNH came out firing on all cylinders early in the second half with a 14-0 run. Junior forward Mike Christensen (Reston, Va.) posted three of his seven points during the run to bring the score to 48-35. The opening minutes of the second half proved to be the difference maker as UNH shot 15-of-28 (54%) in the second stanza. Christensen also posted a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Warriors returned with a run of its own as junior guard Gerry Corcoran (Norwell, Mass.) drilled a 3-pointer to start an 8-0 run for Merrimack. The Warriors, however, were out-rebounded 37-20 in the game and struggled to find any offensive rhythm and second chance shots late in the contest as UNH’s defense held its opponents to just four points in the remaining 4:27 of the contest.
Wildcat senior guard Jermaine Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) registered 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the floor with five assists and four steals, while junior guard Jude Roybal (Albuquerque, N.M.) delivered eight points and three assists to contribute to the victory.
The Wildcats open the regular season on the road when they travel to face the Boston College Eagles. The game is set for 7:00 p.m.
