ORONO, Maine - Rickey White scored a game-high 17 points as he led the University of Maine over the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team, 77-72, at Alfond Arena on Wednesday.
The Black Bears (10-12, 5-5 America East) shot 55.6 percent from the field as White went 7 for 10 from the field and freshman Kevin Reed went 6 for 9 en route to a 15 point night. UNH (3-18, 1-9 America East) got double-digit points from three players, as Senior Jeff Senulis (Grand Island, N.Y.) notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Freshmen Ioannis Karalis (Athens, Greece) and Ronnie Dennis (Abbeville, Ala.) each netted 12.
Maine made its decisive run late in the first half. Moments after the Wildcats had pulled themselves within one with five minutes to go in the half, the Black Bears went on a 12-0 run in the last 3:53 of the half to lead 44-31 at the break.
The Wildcats never recovered, trailing by 20 (71-51) with 4:46 to play and by 15 (72-57) with 2:49 to play. UNH did rally at the end, outscoring the Black Bears 15-5 down the stretch to make it a five-point game.
Eric Dobson also scored in double digits for the Black Bears with 11 points. Maine shot 60.7 percent in the first half, including 80 percent (8 for 10) from three-point range.
The Wildcats found themselves down by 11 early as Maine sprinted out to a 26-15 lead with 9:35 to go in the first half. However, UNH quickly erased the margin to one thanks to a 12-2 run to make it 28-27 with five minutes to go in the half. From there, however, Maine outscored the 'Cats16-4 to take a 44-31 lead at the half.
The Wildcats host Northeastern on Saturday at Lundholm Gymnasium (1 p.m.)
