DURHAM, N.H.-- Marcus Bullock scored 16 points and Austin Ganly connected for 14 to lead the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team to a 71-60 America East victory over Albany on Sunday afternoon in front of 437 at Lundholm Gymnasium.
The Wildcats (6-11, 3-3 America East) have won five of their last six games, the only loss at first-place Vermont, while the Great Danes fell to 3-13 overall and 0-5 in the America East conference.
UNH led by as many as seven points in the first half (16-9) with 8:43 before the intermission, but Albany clawed back into it with a 9-2 run that included three three-pointers, one by Will Brand and two by Rhasheed Peterson. The second trey by Peterson gave the visitors an 18-17 advantage with 6:15 remaining in the first. The Great Danes went into the lockerroom with a one-point advantage, 30-29.
Albany led by as many as six points (39-33) following a basket by Peterson with 16:09 to play in the contest. However, the Wildcats held the visitors scoreless over the next 6:37 with an impressive 13-0 run that featured eight made free throws, four of them by Chris Brown, to give UNH a 46-39 lead that it would never relinquish. The biggest advantage of the game for the Wildcats was 15 points (69-54) with 59 seconds to play following an alley-oop dunk by Ganly off the assist by Bullock.
Albany was led in scoring by Brand with 17 points, followed closely by Peterson with 16 and Antione Johnson with 13.
Brown led all rebounders with eight on the afternoon and Ben Sturgill added six for the 'Cats, who outrebounded the visitors by a 31-25 margin.
Free throws were the major difference in the contest, as UNH connected on 21x25 attempts from the charity stripe (.840), while Albany had just five attempts and made four.
The UNH men's basketball team will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 12, when the squad entertains Hartford. Game time is 7 p.m. in Lundholm Gymnasium.
