DURHAM, N.H.-- Josh Sankes scored 27 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lead Holy Cross to a 73-53 victory over the University of New Hampshire on Tuesday evening at Lundholm Gymnasium.
It was close most of the way and was tied 43-43 with 12:21 to play until the Crusaders (9-15 overall) put together a 22-4 run over six minutes to give the visitors a 65-47 lead. During the run, Sankes was responsible for 12 of the 22 Holy Cross points. In the first half there were four ties between the two teams and the lead was never any larger than six points (21-15 Holy Cross). UNH quickly closed the six-point gap with an 8-1 run making it 23-22 in favor of the Wildcats (3-20 overall) with 3:45 remaining. Chris Brown had six of the points during the run for UNH.
Leading the home team in scoring was Marcelle Williams with 15 points on the evening and three others scored in double figures, including Austin Ganly (12) and Colin Donahue and Brown with 11 points. Rob Marquardt also finished the day with a career-high six blocks.
Only five players scored in the game for Holy Cross and the frontcourt of Sankes, Tom Szatko and Juan Pegues combined for a grand total of 61 points. Szatko and Pegues each contributed 17 points in the winning effort.
The Wildcats will return to action on Feb. 18 at Hofstra and then again on Feb. 20 at Drexel. The next home games for UNH will be played on Feb. 24 vs. Boston University and Feb. 26 vs. Northeastern. Both contests will be played at the Whittemore Center with tipoffs of 7 p.m.
