Fobes Helps Gymnastics Topple Pittsburgh

Austyn Fobes

PITTSBURGH, Pa.Austyn Fobes (Howell, N.J.) earned the floor exercise championship, tied for second place on vault, placed second on uneven bars and all-around to help lead the University of New Hampshire gymnastics team to Sunday night's 193.775-192.65 defeat of the previously unbeaten University of Pittsburgh in EAGL action.

The Wildcats, who improved to 3-2 on the season and 2-1 against EAGL competition, took command of the meet early on by capturing team triumphs on both vault (48.925-48.775) and uneven bars (48.225-47.55).  The Panthers (2-1, 0-1 EAGL) rebounded to record a win in the balance beam competition (48.375-47.925) before UNH closed out the event with an impressive showing on floor (48.675-47.95).

"This was a great victory for us, especially considering we had to back-to-back meets on back-to-back nights without a break," head coach Gail Goodspeed said.  "Our women did a great job, and I'm extremely proud of them."

Chelsea Steinberg (Ridgewood, N.J.) won the all-around championship by compiling a 38.8, followed immediately by Fobes, who posted a 38.625.

Courtney Connors (Buffalo, N.Y.) claimed the vault championship with a score of 9.825, while Steinberg and Fobes tied for second place with matching scores of 9.8.

UNH swept the top two spots on bars, with event champion Danielle Reibold (Horsham, Pa.) registering a 9.75 and Fobes notching a 9.725 for second place.

Steinberg was the top Wildcat on beam, finishing in second place with a 9.775; Jen Aucoin (Mullica Hill, N.J.) recorded a fourth-place score of 9.675.

UNH shined brightest on floor, sweeping the top four positions with Fobes (9.825), Erin Machado (9.8, Swansea, Mass.), Steinberg (9.725) and Kate McGeever (9.675, Saco, Maine) leading the way.

"I think our team is just continuing to improve," Goodspeed added. "Even though the scores weren't necessarily high, that's not indicative of how they performed since both bars and beam were scored very tightly."

The UNH gymnastics team returns to Lundholm Gymnasium to play host to the University of Bridgeport on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. A Kids Club clinic immediately follows the meet. For ticket information, CLICK HERE or call (603) 862-4000, x 5.
