DENTON, TEXAS—The University of New Hampshire women’s gymnastics team was edged by Texas Woman’s University on Friday evening by a score of 195.250-195.1 dropping the Wildcat’s record to 12-3, but giving the squad its best road score of the season and tying its overall high water mark for 2010.
Leading the team with an impressive all-around performance was junior Chelsea Steinberg (Ridgewood, N.J.) as she placed second in the four-event competition with a score of 39.1. Steinberg took second place in the floor exercise with a score of 9.875 and was tied for third on beam with a 9.775. She took second on vault with a mark of 9.85 and had a 9.6 on bars.
Senior Helena Diodati (Scarborough, Maine) continues to be a team leader and a consistent performer on her key events. She took first place overall in vault with a score of 9.875. Freshman Austyn Fobes (Howell, N.J.) was also solid in the vault finishing fourth with a 9.825. As a team on vault UNH was strong posting an event score of 49.050.
On bars, UNH saw Diodati and sophomore Danielle Reibold (Horsham, Pa.) each tied for fourth place as UNH’s top finishers with identical scores of 9.775. Bars was not the best event of the night for the ‘Cats as the team checked in with a 48.0.
On beam, junior Katie Lawrence (Lyme, Conn.) grabbed first-place honors with a routine that was worth a top score of 9.85 for the Wildcats. UNH had five of the top six finishers on balance beam with five gymnasts scoring 9.75 or higher. The team posted an impressive score of 48.925 overall.
And on floor it was Steinberg in second place followed by a tie in third place by Fobes and junior Katie Caliendo (Manorville, N.Y.) with scores of 9.850. UNH was strong yet again in the floor exercise with a team total of 49.125.
This marked the end of the regular season for the Wildcats and they will now turn their attention to the EAGL Championships which will be hosted by UNH on March 27 in Lundholm Gymnasium. The meet begins at 2 p.m. and tickets are still available online at www.unhwildcats.com.
