GYMNASTS IMPROVE TO 12-2 AFTER COME-FROM-BEHIND VICTORY OVER EAGL RIVAL NORTH CAROLINA STATE

DURHAM, N.H.—The University of New Hampshire women's gymnastics team improved to 12-2 on the season after recording an impressive come-from-behind victory over EAGL rival North Carolina State (195.1-193.825) on Senior Night Friday evening at Lundholm Gymnasium.

The Wildcats trailed by a 146.525-145.950 margin after three events. The Wolfpack had just scored an impressive 49.025 mark on floor as compared to a 48.325 on beam by UNH to pull ahead as the teams moved into the final rotation. The Wildcats won it on floor as all six gymnasts hit their routines to record a 49.150. Five UNH gymnasts all scored above a 9.80 in the event. NC State suffered three falls on beam and scored a 47.30 to allow the Wildcats to steal the victory.

Leading the team was junior Chelsea Steinberg (Ridgewood, N.J.) who took first place in the all-around competition with a mark of 39.050. She was fourth on vault (9.775), tied for second on beam (9.750), finished tied for first on floor with a judgement of 9.85 and was eighth on bars (9.675).

Senior Helena Diodati (Scarborough, Maine) took second place overall on vault with a score of 9.85 to lead the event.

On beam, three UNH gymnasts tied for second place with scores of 9.750, including senior Julie Sauchuk (Peabody, Mass.), junior Katie Lawrence (Lyme, Conn.) and Steinberg.

Four of the top five finishers on the uneven bars were Wildcats as UNH posted a team score of 48.950. All Finishing in second place with scores of 9.825 were Lawrence, sophomore Ali Carr (Chelmsford, Mass.), and sophomore Danielle Reibold (Horsham, Pa.).

In the floor exercise, two seniors led the way as Sauchuk and Steinberg each posted scores of 9.85.

The Wildcats will hit the road when the squad travels to Denton, Texas for a meet at Texas Woman's University on March 19th, the final regular season meet of 2010. Then on March 27th UNH will be the host of the EAGL Championship meet at 2 p.m. in Lundholm Gymnasium, a meet featuring all eight EAGL teams under one roof.
