DAVIS, Calif—The University of New Hampshire gymnastics team placed third out of four teams at a West Coast quad meet held on the campus of UC Davis. The winner of the meet was Sacramento State (194.625), followed by UC Davis (192.950), UNH (192.525) and Bowling Green (192.40). The Wildcats are now 15-7 on the season heading into their final home meet of the season vs. Michigan State on March 15, Senior Day.
The Wildcats continue to excel in the vault and were led by junior Helena Diodati (Scarborough, Maine) and sophomore Katie Caliendo (Manorville, N.Y.) as they gave UNH a 1-2 punch with respective scores of 9.8 and 9.775. The Wildcats performed well as a team in the event, posting a 48.5.
It was a similar story on bars for the ‘Cats as Diodati was the top finisher for the squad, placing third overall with a score of 9.825. She was followed closely in fourth place by freshman Ali Carr (Chelmsford, Mass.) who checked in with a judgement on bars of 9.8. The team recorded a 48.475 in the event.
Beam was once again the nemesis for UNH, which counted two falls in the event. However, the Wildcats got an outstanding performance from Katie Lawrence (Lyme, Conn.), who earned first place overall with a mark of 9.825. Right behind her was an outstanding performance by junior Keeley Smith (University Place, Wash.), as she placed third with a 9.80.
In the floor exercise, junior Taryn LaFountain (Utica, N.Y.) finished among the top three with a score of 9.80, good for second place overall.
The Wildcats return to action for their final home meet of the season on March 15 vs. Michigan State. It is also Senior Day for the ‘Cats. Tickets are still available online at www.unhwildcats.com.
