Raleigh, N.C.—The University of New Hampshire women’s gymnastics team placed fourth out of five teams at North Carolina State’s Governor’s Cup meet on Saturday evening.
North Carolina State won the meet with a high score of 194.950, followed by North Carolina (194.450), Maryland (193.675), UNH (191.775) and Towson (191.70).
Leading the way for the ‘Cats was Keeley Smith (University Place, Wash.) who won the balance beam competition with the high score of 9.825. Junior Taryn LaFountain (Utica, N.Y.) tied for third place on beam with a score of 9.775. Beam was the team’s second-best event, as UNH scored a 48.6 team score. The team was strongest on vault with a mark of 48.875.
Senior Justine Turner (Salem, N.H.) led the Wildcats in two events, placing in a tie for fourth on vault with a score of 9.85. She also led UNH in the floor exercise with a mark of 9.75 to tie for fourth place overall.
Freshman Danielle Reibold (Horsham, Pa.) was the top performer for the ‘Cats on bars with a score of 9.725 to tie for 11th place.
The lone all-arounder for UNH was junior Helena Diodati (Scarborough, Maine), who posted a four-event score of 38.0.
The Wildcat’s record is now 8-3 overall and the team will return to action at home in the annual Fox Run Invitational on Feb. 14. The meet, which begins at 7 p.m. in Lundholm Gym, features UNH, Air Force, Bridgeport and Yale. Tickets for the team’s biggest home meet of the season are available at www.unhwildcats.com.
