GYMNASTS OPEN SEASON WITH WIN OVER EAGL RIVAL RUTGERS, 191.775-190.125

The University of New Hampshire women’s gymnastics team opened up the 2007 campaign with a victory, as the Wildcats defeated EAGL Conference rival Rutgers on Saturday evening, 191.775-190.125, in Lundholm Gym.
    The Wildcats were led by sophomore all-arounder Justine Turner (Salem, N.H.) who took first place in the all-around competition with a four-event score of 38.925.  Turner took first place on the vault with a 9.825 and also took first-place honors in the floor with a mark of 9.85. On bars she finished fifth with a personal best of 9.625 and she was also fifth on beam with a an identical personal best of 9.625.
    Freshman gymnast Helena Diodatti (Scarborough, Maine) took top honors on bars with a first-place score of 9.8 for first place. She also posted a 9.525 on vault for 10th.
    The Wildcats’ top performer on beam was freshman Taryn LaFountain (Utica, N.Y.), who posted a score of 9.725 for first place.
As a team UNH was strongest in the vault with a team total of 48.575.
    UNH had several gymnasts earn second-place honors as well. In vault, junior Katelyn Schenkel (Pittsford, N.Y.) posted a personal best of 9.8. On bars freshman Diane Grey (Spring Texas) recorded a 9.75. On beam it was freshman Keeley Smith (University Place, Wash.) posting a 9.675, and in floor exercise it was Fairen Plummer (Lousiville, Ky.) who finished with a 9.75.
    With the win, UNH moves to 1-0 on the season and the squad will return to action on Jan. 12 at Rhode Island with Rutgers and Yale. The next home meet for the Wildcats is set for Feb. 4 vs. Denver. The meet begins at 1 p.m. in Lundholm Gymnasium and tickets are still available at www.unhwildcats.com.
