TOWSON, MD.-- Sophomore gymnast Mariana Pena Trestini (Valencia, Venezuela) of the University of New Hampshire was named East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Specialist of the Week for the second consecutive week following her outstanding efforts in three events on Jan. 16 vs. Missouri.
Pena Trestini led the defending EAGL champions with first-place finishes on beam and in the floor exercise, earning identical 9.9 scores in each event. She also placed third on bars with a judgement of 9.825.
While UNH (ranked 18th in the nation) was edged by Missouri (196.050-195.60), the Wildcat team score was the sixth-best in the gymnastics program's history.
Looking at the league standings, UNH is ranked No. 1 in the EAGL with a season average of 195.925, followed by North Carolina (194.8), West Virginia (194.513), Pittsburgh (193.875), Maryland (193.738), Rutgers (192.925), North Carolina State (192.792) and Towson (191.887). In addition, UNH's high score of the season (195.6 vs. Missouri) is the second-highest by an EAGL team in 2004. The highest was a 196.25 by West Virginia.
The Wildcats return to action on Sat., Jan. 24, when the squad competes at Towson with Wilson College. The meet begins at 7 p.m. The next home meet for the squad is on Jan. 31 vs. Pittsburgh. The meet begins at 7 p.m. in Lundholm Gymnasium.
