Frates Tabbed America East Player of the Week in Field Hockey

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.Whitney Frates (Woodstock, Vt.), a senior forward on the University of New Hampshire field hockey team, was honored as the inaugural recipient of the America East Player of the Week award in the 2011 season, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.

Frates, a 2010 NFHCA All-America Second Team selection, scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead UNH to victories against sixth-ranked Ohio State University (3-1) – UNH's first win vs. a top-10 team since September 1998 – and Kent State University (5-1) in the opening weekend of action.

She set the tone for the weekend by setting up a goal 3:23 into the game against OSU and the Wildcats went on to build a 3-0 halftime lead en route to the road win on Aug. 27. Frates then matched her career highs in both goals (two) and points (five) vs. Kent State; her back-to-back goals spanning 62 seconds quickly increased UNH's advantage from two goals (3-1) to four (5-1).

Frates, who was feted as America East Player of the Week once in 2010 and is a two-time All-Conference First Team honoree, ascended to #2 on UNH's career assist leaderboard (26) as well as #6 in points (88) and #9 in goals (31).

New Hampshire returns to action Sept. 2 for its home opener vs. Brown University. Game time at Memorial Field is 3 p.m.
