CAMBRIDGE, Mass.Whitney Frates (Woodstock, Vt.), a freshman forward on the University of New Hampshire field hockey team, was named Rookie of the Week by America East on Monday. A UNH player has received a conference honor each of the two weeks in the 2008 season, as Sarah Craigue (Concord, N.H.) was the Player of the Week last week.

Frates recorded three points (one goal, one asssist) to help lead UNH to victories against Ivy League foes Brown University (5-2 on Sept. 5) and Harvard University (3-2; Sept. 7) last weekend.

She recorded her first career point with an assist against Brown. Then against Harvard, Frates’ tally was the last of three UNH goals in a 13-minute span that gave the Wildcats a 3-1 lead; her goal proved to be the game-winning goal. She also helped produce the Wildcats’ second goal vs. the Crimson, as her initial shot was stopped by the goalkeeper but a teammate scored off the rebound.

Frates, with her speed and skill, has provided a spark off the bench for the Wildcats in every game this season.

New Hampshire, winners of three straight with a 3-1 overall record, returns to action Sept. 14 against 10th-ranked Michigan State University. Game time at Memorial Field is 12 p.m.
