Football's Jared Smith Drafted by Seattle Seahawks
NEW YORK – University of New Hampshire senior defensive tackle Jared Smith (Greencastle, Pa.) was selected Saturday by the Seattle Seahawks with the 35th pick in the seventh round (No. 241 overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft, held at Radio City Music Hall.
Smith, the 13th UNH football player ever selected in the NFL Draft, becomes the first Wildcat drafted since defensive back Corey Graham, who was the Chicago Bears' fifth-round selection (168th overall) in 2007. Graham, a member of the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, is the lone active NFL player from UNH.
During his 2012 senior season, Smith earned a berth on the The Sports Network All-America Third Team, the Beyond Sports Network All-America Third Team, the All-CAA First Team, the College Sports Madness All-CAA First Team and the All-New England Team. The 6-foot-3, 302-pound DT started 11 games and compiled 40 tackles, 26 solo, with a team-leading 10 tackles for loss (0.91 per game), which ranked fifth in the CAA. The Greencastle, Pa., native tied for the team lead with four sacks, forced two fumbles, recovered a fumble, collected four pass breakups and tallied a team-high three blocked kicks.
