GREER NAMED CAA & ECAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF WEEK AND COLLEGE SPORTING NEWS ALL-STAR
DURHAM, N.H. – UNH senior safety John
Greer (Buffalo, N.Y.) was named the ECAC football
Defensive Player of the Week at the D-I FCS level Tuesday, one day
after claiming CAA Defensive Player of the Week and College
Sporting News All-Star honors for his two-interception performance,
highlighted by a 40-yard, pick-six, in the Wildcats' 17-0 win over
Richmond on Saturday.
Greer's career-high two interceptions led to 10 of UNH's 17 points. His touchdown return of an Aaron Corp interception got the 'Cats on the board with 12:40 remaining in the first quarter. Greer's second interception, this one of Nick Hicks' pass in the third quarter, was returned 20 yards from the Richmond 35-yard line to its 15, setting the stage for redshirt freshman kicker Mike MacArthur's 34-yard field goal with 9:11 left in the third, staking the Wildcats (3-3, 1-2 CAA) a 17-0 lead.
The 6-0, 213-pound defensive back added four tackles in New Hampshire's first CAA victory of the season and school-record 12th consecutive home triumph. The Wildcats' defense forced seven turnovers, including six interceptions, in limiting the Spiders (2-3, 0-2) to only 71 passing yards.
UNH visits James Madison this Saturday, Oct. 16, for a 3:30 p.m. game. The Wildcats' next home game is the inaugural Colonial Clash at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, versus the University of Massachusetts on Oct. 23 at 3:30 p.m. For ticket information, call 1-800-745-3000, visit the Whittemore Center box office weekdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. or CLICK HERE.
