UNH'S DAVID BALL HONORED FOR EFFORTS IN VICTORY AT UC DAVIS

Named A-10 Player of the Week and I-AA.org All-Star

DURHAM, N.H.-- Junior wide receiver David Ball (Orange, Vt.) was named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week and a I-AA.org national All-Star for his outstanding efforts in UNH's 17-13 season-opening victory at UC Davis.

Ball caught the game-winning 4 yd. touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Ricky Santos (Bellingham, Mass.) with 35 seconds to play to secure the victory for the Wildcats. Ball had three receptions for 69 yards in the winning drive, which covered a incredible 84 yards in only 56 seconds. Ball caught nine passes on the evening for 137 yards, earning him his ninth 100-plus yard receiving game of his career,

A first-team preseason All-American selection by "The Sports Network", Ball is also one of 16 players listed as the top candidates for the Walter Payton Award, which is given nationally to the top player in I-AA football. Also on that list is Santos, which marks the first time UNH has ever had two players on the "Payton Watch". Santos was a finalist for the honor in 2004. Former Wildcat Jerry Azumah is the only UNH player to ever win the Walter Payton Award (1998).

In other news today, the Wildcats remained the No. 7 ranked team in I-AA football according to "The Sports Network I-AA Football Poll".

UNH is off this week and will not return to action until Sept. 17 when the team travels to play Atlantic 10 foe Towson. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. UNH is now 9-1 in its last 10 road contests dating back to the 2004 season. The only road loss last season was at Montana in the NCAA I-AA Quarterfinals.
