DURHAM, N.H. - Former University of New Hampshire football player and Pro Bowl NFL cornerback Jerry Azumah formerly of the Chicago Bears has announced a fundraising event on Saturday, May 6th beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the 100 Club in Portsmouth, N.H.
Azumah will be joined at the fundraiser by former Bears teammate Brian Urlacher, former NFL Defensive Player of the Year, who has made five Pro Bowl appearances in his sixth season with Chicago.
The proceeds from the event will benefit the Azumah Student Assistance Program (A+SAP), which funds scholarship aid for inner- city high school athletes in Chicago and Worcester, as well as the Wildcat Athletics Council, which provides scholarships for University of New Hampshire student-athletes. The event was initiated by Jerry as a way to give back to the communities that helped him achieve his goals in life, through high school and college scholarships.
Seacoast celebrity auctioneer Joe Shanley will lead the live and silent auctions, beginning promptly at 8 p.m. The auction items will include a trip to Chicago to see a Bears game, which includes dinner with selected Bears players, Azumah's cleats from the 2003 Pro Bowl, autographed sports memorabilia, 2006 UNH football season tickets and gift certificates to local business and hospitality establishments.
Azumah played for the Chicago Bears for seven seasons, appearing in 105 career games, starting in 48 of them. He had 384 tackles, 10 interceptions, 29 passes defensed, 6?? sacks, six forced fumbles and one recovery. Azumah was a standout running back on the UNH football team from 1995-1999. He won the Walter Payton Award in 1999, given annually to the best I-AA college player in the nation. During his four years as a Wildcat, he was an All-American tailback who holds numerous team records, including the record for touchdowns rushing (60) and touchdowns overall (69), and Division 1-AA records for rushing yards (6,193), all purpose yards (8,376) and points scored (424).
