UNH TAILBACK STEPHAN LEWIS NAMED TO PAYTON WATCH LISTING

UNH junior tailback Stephan Lewis (Coatesville, Pa) of the University of New Hampshire football team has been added to the Walter Payton Award Candidate Listing called "The Payton Watch", put out by the Sports Network.

As many of you remember, UNH's Jerry Azumah won the Walter Payton Award back in 1998. He is the last player from UNH and from the Atlantic 10 football conference to earn the honor.

Lewis is presently ranked first in the nation in scoring with 11 touchdowns this season, second in all-purpose yardage with 247.0 yards per contest and fifth in rushing with 151.0 ypg. He leads the Atlantic 10 Football Conference in both scoring and rushing.

Following four full weeks of exciting play in I-AA college football, The Sports Network, I-AA college football's most widely recognized information service, has announced its revised and official Payton Watch and Buchanan Battle lists. The Payton Watch and Buchanan Battle pages, which can be found at The Sports Network’s website (www.sportsnetwork.com) keep track of the quest for the 15th Walter Payton Award, given annually to the top player in I-AA football, and the 7th Buck Buchanan Award, which goes to the top defensive player in I-AA. The honors will be presented at the 15th annual I-AA College Football Awards at a time and date to be determined. The Eddie Robinson Award, presented to I-AA’s top coach, will also be bestowed at that event.

Four new players grace both the updated Payton Watch and Buchanan Battle lists. On the Payton Watch, running backs C.J. Hudson (Eastern Kentucky), Marcus King (Northern Arizona), Stephan Lewis (New Hampshire), and wide receiver Chas Gessner (Brown) have been selected as potential candidates. For the Buchanan, defensive backs LeVar Greene (Youngstown State), Isaiah Grier (Rhode Island), Vince Huntsberger (Montana), and linebacker Derrick Lloyd (James Madison) have found their names on the list.

The official Payton Watch” and Buchanan Battle lists will undergo two additional revisions prior to the mailing of ballots on November 12th. The second revisions will be announced October 31st, and the third just prior to the mailing of ballots. The ballots will be mailed to the media and I-AA sports information directors selected for the voting process on November 26th, and will be due Monday, December 3rd. The top three finalists (in terms of votes received) for the Walter Payton Award will be invited to attend the presentation of the Awards, with the winner of that Award not announced until the event. The date, time, and venue of the 15th Annual College Football Awards will be changed due to the recent tragedy in New York City. The event was slated to be held at New York’s famed Downtown Athletic Club on Dec. 3rd, but will likely be pushed to a date closer to the Dec. 21st I-AA national championship.

Following are the 32 current members of both the “Payton Watch” and “Buchanan Battle” lists, with additional information on each player, as well as history and facts about each of the I-AA awards, available at www.sportsnetwork.com.
