Wildcat Summer-Jack Doherty

Hello Wildcats! My name is Jack Doherty and I am a junior finance major on the men's soccer team from Meriden, N.H. This summer I had the opportunity to work in Los Angeles at FOX Sports Studios as part of the team providing production support for the FIFA Men's World Cup games. I knew I had a job and a place to live but I underestimated what the whole experience would offer. Here is my "Wildcat Summer!"
WHERE I LIVED
I lived in Manhattan Beach with the Stone family. Not just any family. Rob Stone, one of the FOX Sports Soccer personalities was only with us for a few weeks before he had to leave for Russia. My time with the family was filled with chauffeuring kids to soccer games, play practices and surfing lessons. I baked pink confetti cakes and played beach volleyball with 10-year olds. I saw the sun set over the Pacific Ocean every day. It didn't rain once while I was there. I walked the famous Manhattan Beach piers. Leaving that paradise to go to work was a challenge. The drive to and from the FOX lot where I worked could be as much as a two-hour commute. I have never seen anything like the 405.
FOX SPORTS STUDIOS
I was a Production Assistant for the World Cup pre and post production team for FOX Sports. Even though I am a finance major this was a great way for me to explore another field. It was amazing to learn all that goes on behind the scenes. I will never watch a TV show or movie without appreciation of what it takes to make that happen. Arriving at FOX the first day and jumping right in, I quickly adapted to the production lifestyle of a lot of work and little sleep.
I worked in edit bays with an assistant producer and an editor 3-4 times a week where we would work together on a 15-60 second clip for 8-10 hours which we had prepared for the day before or day of. Sometimes I had to be at work at 4:00 a.m. Other days I started at 1:00 p.m. and didn't get home until 10:00 p.m. Every day was different. Being on the FOX lot I never knew who I was going to see. One day Childish Gambino walked by and the next day I heard the voice of LaVar Ball before I even saw him. There is never a dull moment working at FOX.
BOXING
I wanted to stay fit and active while in LA and found a boxing gym (Beastie) five minutes away from where I was living. I went a couple of times a week for an hour at a time where I trained with a personal trainer named Heather who kicked my butt every time I went. It kept my cardio up and kept me active when I most needed it. I found running the beep test for coach Hubbard was a lot easier than an hour long boxing class.
DAYS OFF
With days off I was able to hike to the Wisdom Tree where I was able to see downtown LA and all the way up the coast of California. I was also able to ride the SkySlide which is a glass slide that loops around the outside of the US Bank tower 1,000 feet above the ground. No I don't remember what it was like because I blacked out for the duration of the slide. I also enjoyed taking the kids I lived with and babysat for to get breakfast at Martha's or ice cream at the Creamery. When I was not with the Stone family, I took trips with FOX sports co-workers. I got to see a lot of the coast and explore the inner city. I drove to Venice Beach, through Malibu and Santa Monica.
BACK TO NH
I returned home on July 8 just in time for a family reunion. I still have a lot of summer left and look forward to spending time with my family and training for the upcoming season. August 7 is going to be here before I know it. This is a summer I will never forget. And in case you're curious, the answer is yes. I will go back to Manhattan Beach.
