BOSTON – Casey Lauter (Northport, N.Y.), a senior on the University of New Hampshire gymnastics team, was named one of three finalists for the 2018 America East Woman of the Year. The conference made the announcement Tuesday afternoon.
Lauter was named a recipient of UNH's Athletic Director's Award for Academic Excellence earlier this month. She recorded a 3.92 cumulative GPA while earning a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, and she is a two-time inductee to Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society. Lauter has been named to the NACGC/W Scholastic Team and East Atlantic Gymnastics League All-Scholastic Team every year. In 2017, she was the recipient of a Joyce V. Hiller Scholarship, which is awarded by the Department of Kinesiology based on GPA and engagement in the service to youth.
As team captain, Lauter was the 2018 EAGL regular-season champion on balance beam and went on to earn EAGL All-Tournament First Team on that apparatus. In her last home meet, Lauter recorded a perfect 10 on the beam to earn one of her three EAGL Specialist of the Week awards in '18. She became just the second Wildcat to score a 10 on the beam; the previous time it happened was March 1996. Lauter also recorded the third-highest mark in program history during the 2016 season with a judgment of 9.950 at West Virginia University.
This year, Lauter helped lead UNH to an NCAA regional and the Wildcats recorded their highest team finish since 2010. At the annual team banquet, she received the Most Inspirational award, a distinction also received in 2015.
Lauter was also an All-EAGL First Team on beam and tied for the individual beam title at the conference championship in 2017. As a sophomore, she earned All-EAGL First Team on beam and was an All-Tournament Second Team honoree.
Outside of her athletic accomplishments, Lauter's involvement in community service included working with the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention Program, serving in the employee fitness program, and serving as a teaching assistant for exercise lab techniques. She served as a tutor for Physiology of Exercise and also worked as an instructor and coach for UNH's community gymnastics class and summer camps. Lauter was also chosen to participate in the New England Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (NEACSM) College Bowl the past two years.
The three Woman of the Year finalists were selected from a pool of 14 candidates that included fellow UNH Wildcat Lisa Wedsjö (Saltsjöbaden, Sweden) of the ski team. The other two finalists are Erika Leonard (University of Maine; softball) and Kylie Ohlmiller (Stony Brook University; lacrosse).
This America East honor recognizes the conference's senior female student-athlete who has best distinguished herself throughout her collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service and leadership.
To be nominated, student-athletes must have completed intercollegiate eligibility in their primary sport by the end of the 2018 spring season or received an undergraduate degree prior to the conclusion of the summer 2018 term and have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.00 scale).
The 2018 America East Woman of the Year will be announced and honored at the conference's annual awards dinner June 5.
