DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire graduate Nicholas Ritzo (Rye, N.H.) added to his list of academic and athletic honors Tuesday when he was named to the 2017-18 Google Cloud Academic Men's Track/Cross Country All District 1 First Team, an award administered by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Ritzo was named to the America East Outdoor Track & Field All-Academic Team last week.
Earlier this month, Ritzo earned UNH's male Award for Academic Excellence for having the highest grade point average among senior athletes. He had a 3.94 gpa while earning a degree in genetics.
Ritzo's interest in genetics was spurred in part by the fact he was diagnosed as a Type I diabetic before he turned two. He has an insulin pump and has to regularly monitor his blood sugar level and his diet.
IN THE FIELD
- In his final appearance in the America East Championships in early May, Ritzo earned points in three events.
- He was sixth in the shot put, seventh in the discus and eighth in the javelin.
- Ritzo finished fifth in the discus at the New England Outdoor Championships at Dartmouth College on May 12 in his final competition as a Wildcat.
- He was fifth in the shot put in the America East Indoor Championships in March.
THE CoSIDA AWARDS
- The Google Cloud Academic All-District 1 Team is voted on by members of Division I sports information offices at universities in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.
- The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the playing field and in the classroom.
- The Academic All-District I honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All America ballot.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"Nick's been a great representative of a New Hampshire high school athlete who came here and achieved academically and athletically. We're very glad he chose to come here and excel. In addition, he's learned to live and excel while also living with his diabetes."
